Acca insurance is one of the most common bookmaker promotions on accumulator bets. In its usual form, if every selection in your accumulator wins except one, the bookmaker refunds your stake – usually as a free bet token rather than cash – up to a maximum. This guide explains how acca insurance works, the terms that matter, and its limitations.
Quick answer: acca insurance refunds your stake, usually as a free bet, when exactly one leg of a qualifying accumulator loses. It pays nothing extra if the acca wins, and nothing at all if two or more legs lose.

What is an accumulator?
An accumulator (acca) combines several selections from different events into one bet. The odds are multiplied together, so the potential return is larger, but every selection must win for the bet to pay out. The more selections you add, the less likely the bet is to win.
How acca insurance works
- Opt in to the promotion if required.
- Place an accumulator that meets the qualifying conditions – for example a minimum number of selections and minimum odds per selection.
- If all selections win, you are paid as normal.
- If exactly one selection loses, the bookmaker refunds your stake, usually as a free bet token, up to a set maximum.
- If two or more selections lose, there is no refund.
A worked example
Illustrative only – not an offer from any bookmaker.
You place a £5 accumulator with five selections under an acca insurance promotion. Four win and one loses. Under a typical refund-as-free-bet structure, you would receive a £5 free bet token. If you then use that token and it wins, you would usually receive the winnings but not the £5 token stake. Your original £5 stake has still been lost.
What are the usual acca insurance requirements?
Acca insurance terms vary by bookmaker, but most set a minimum number of selections, minimum odds on each leg and a maximum refund, and many ask you to opt in first. These are the terms to check:
- Opt-in – some promotions need you to opt in before betting.
- Minimum selections – the acca must have at least a set number of legs.
- Minimum odds – often per selection, sometimes for the whole bet.
- Eligible sports, markets and competitions.
- Maximum refund – stakes above the cap are not fully covered.
- Refund format – cash or free bet token; tokens usually have their own expiry and minimum odds, and the token stake is usually not returned.
- Cash out – cashing out usually makes the bet ineligible.
- Void selections – if a leg is void, the acca may fall below the minimum number of selections and lose its insurance.
- Bet types – insurance usually applies to standard accumulators, not to multiple-bet types such as system bets.
What acca insurance does and does not do
Acca insurance does not remove the risk of losing your stake, and it does not change the odds of your selections winning. It only applies in one specific outcome (exactly one losing leg), and the refund is usually a token with conditions rather than cash. In most outcomes, it has no effect at all.
It also tends to encourage larger accumulators, which are less likely to win. Do not add selections just to meet the minimum for a promotion.
Acca insurance and other acca offers
Bookmakers run other accumulator promotions too, such as acca boosts (a percentage increase on winnings for qualifying accas). Since 19 January 2026, a single promotion cannot mix gambling products, and any wagering requirement is capped at 10 times (Gambling Commission, LCCP SR Code 5.1.1).

Which welcome offers give free bets for accas?
Some welcome offers pay part of their free bets as tokens that can only be used on accumulators. That is different from acca insurance: you get them for placing a qualifying bet, not as a refund. Two examples we checked on the bookmakers’ own pages on 21 October 2026:

What is the difference between acca insurance and an acca boost? Acca insurance refunds your stake, usually as a free bet, if exactly one leg loses. An acca boost increases your winnings by a percentage if every leg wins. Neither changes the chance of your selections winning.
