How UK online casinos are regulated
Any online casino offering games to people in Great Britain must hold a remote casino licence from the Gambling Commission. Licensed operators must verify your age and identity before you can gamble, use games tested for fairness, offer safer gambling tools such as deposit limits, time-outs and self-exclusion, take part in GamStop, and follow rules on promotions and fair treatment. UK rules that shape every casino offer
- 10x wagering cap. Since 19 January 2026, a licensed operator must not apply a wagering requirement of more than 10 times to bonus funds (Gambling Commission, LCCP Social Responsibility Code 5.1.1(3a)). The Commission’s own example of the old problem: a £10 bonus at 50x meant £500 of play before you could withdraw.
- No mixed-product promotions. From the same date, a single incentive can’t combine betting, casino, bingo and lottery (SR Code 5.1.1(3b)). The Commission says “Spend £5 on casino products and get 20 spins” is compliant, but “Bet £5 and get 20 free spins” is not.
- Slot stake limits. The most you can stake per online slot game cycle is £5 if you’re 25 or over and £2 if you’re 18–24. The £5 limit started on 9 April 2025 and the £2 limit on 21 May 2025. These limits apply to online slots only, not to roulette, blackjack or other table games.
- No credit cards. Since 14 April 2020, licensed operators can’t accept credit card payments for online gambling, including through e-wallets funded by a credit card.
Types of casino game
Slots are the most widely played. Each has a return to player (RTP) figure and a volatility profile; see our slots guide and best paying slots. Whatever the game, the house has a built-in edge over time. Casino games are entertainment you pay for, not a way to make money.
