Blackjack house edge depends on the table rules, and you can see the effect with simple maths. The biggest single rule to check is the blackjack payout: a table paying 6:5 instead of 3:2 costs you about 1.4% of every stake. Other rules, such as whether the dealer hits soft 17, shift the edge by fractions of a percent. This guide works through the numbers, explains basic strategy, and why no betting system beats the house.

How blackjack works
You and the dealer each start with two cards; the aim is to finish closer to 21 than the dealer without going over. Number cards count at face value, picture cards count 10, and an ace counts 1 or 11. An ace plus a 10-value card as your first two cards is a “blackjack”. You can usually hit, stand, double down (double your stake for one more card) or split a pair into two hands.
The house advantage comes mainly from one fact: you act first. If you bust, you lose immediately, even if the dealer would have bust too.
Worked maths: why 6:5 matters so much
In an eight-deck shoe there are 416 cards: 32 aces and 128 ten-value cards. The chance your first two cards are a blackjack is:
2 × (32 ÷ 416) × (128 ÷ 415) ≈ 4.75%
A 3:2 table pays 1.5 units on a blackjack; a 6:5 table pays 1.2 units. The difference is 0.3 units, about 4.5–4.75% of the time (a little less once you allow for the dealer also having blackjack, which is a push). So:
0.3 × ~4.6% ≈ 1.4% extra house edge
That matches the published rule-effect figure of −1.39% for “blackjack pays 6-5” in Wizard of Odds’ rule-variation table. For comparison, a European roulette even-money bet has a 2.70% edge, so a 6:5 rule moves blackjack a long way towards it.
Worked maths: insurance
When the dealer shows an ace, you may be offered insurance: a side bet of half your stake that pays 2:1 if the dealer has blackjack. With the dealer’s ace removed from an eight-deck shoe, 128 of the remaining 415 cards are ten-value, so the chance of dealer blackjack is about 30.8% (ignoring your own cards).
Expected value per £1 insured = (0.308 × £2) − (0.692 × £1) ≈ −£0.075
That’s a house edge of about 7.5% on the insurance bet, much worse than the main game. “Even money” on your own blackjack is the same bet in disguise.
How common rules change the edge
These figures are from Wizard of Odds’ rule-variation table, measured against eight decks, dealer stands on soft 17, double on any first two cards, double after split allowed and splits to four hands, with basic strategy:
| Rule | Effect on player return |
|---|---|
| Blackjack pays 6:5 (instead of 3:2) | −1.39% |
| Dealer hits soft 17 | −0.22% |
| No doubling after splitting | −0.14% |
| European no hole card | −0.11% |
| Six decks instead of eight | +0.02% |
| Single deck | +0.48% |
Negative numbers raise the house edge. Online and live tables publish their rules in the game’s help screen; check the payout and dealer rule before you sit down. RNG and live blackjack also state an RTP in the game info, which is the figure that applies to that table.
Basic strategy
Basic strategy is the mathematically best decision (hit, stand, double, split or surrender) for each combination of your hand and the dealer’s up card. It doesn’t overcome the house edge; it minimises it. The edge figures above all assume you play it. Some well-known basic strategy points for multi-deck games:
- Always split aces and eights; never split tens or fives.
- Stand on hard 17 or more.
- Hit hard 12–16 against a dealer 7 or higher.
- Don’t take insurance.
Exact strategy charts depend on the rules, so use one that matches your table.
Why betting systems don’t work
Systems such as Martingale (doubling after each loss) change how you lose, not whether the house has an edge. Every hand carries the same negative expectation, so the total expected loss is the edge multiplied by the total amount staked, whatever pattern you stake in. Martingale produces many small wins and occasional very large losses, and table maximums stop the doubling. Card counting relies on deck conditions that online RNG games (which typically reshuffle every hand) and continuous-shuffle tables remove. Treat blackjack as paid entertainment.
Blackjack and bonuses
Casino bonuses often weight table games lower for wagering. Unibet’s verified offer says table games contribute 10% towards wagering, and 10bet’s bonus must be wagered on slots. Check contribution before playing blackjack with bonus funds. See casino bonuses and the UK wagering cap, and for live tables, live casino UK. Our roulette guide works through that game’s maths the same way.
UK rules that apply
- Stake limits: the £5 / £2 online stake limits apply to slots only, not blackjack, so your own limits matter even more at the table.
- 10x wagering cap: bonus wagering can’t exceed 10 times (LCCP SR Code 5.1.1, from 19 January 2026).
- No credit cards: banned for gambling since 14 April 2020.
Staying in control
Blackjack hands are quick, and stakes aren’t capped by law as slots are. Set a deposit limit before you play, decide in advance what you can afford to lose, and use reality checks and time-outs. Never chase losses. If you want a break from all UK-licensed gambling sites at once, GamStop is free and lets you self-exclude for 6 months, 1 year or 5 years. The National Gambling Helpline (0808 8020 133) is free, confidential and open 24 hours. More help: responsible gambling.
Frequently asked questions
What is the house edge in blackjack? It depends on the rules. With basic strategy, rules such as 6:5 payouts (−1.39%) and dealer hitting soft 17 (−0.22%) raise it, per Wizard of Odds.
Should I play 6:5 blackjack? It costs about 1.4% more per stake than 3:2. Look for 3:2 tables.
Is insurance worth taking? No. In an eight-deck shoe it carries an edge of roughly 7.5%.
Can a betting system beat blackjack? No. Staking patterns don’t change the edge on each hand.
Do slot stake limits apply to blackjack? No. The £5 / £2 limits apply to online slots only.
