Types of casino welcome bonus
Deposit match
The casino adds bonus funds based on your deposit – for example, a 100% match up to a stated amount. Bonus funds usually carry wagering, now capped at 10x. Some casinos apply the requirement to the bonus only; others to the bonus plus deposit. Since the cap applies to “bonus funds”, check exactly how the operator words it.
Free spins

Cashback
A percentage of losses returned, as cash or as bonus funds, over a set period. Check whether it’s paid as withdrawable cash.
How the 10x cap works in practice
A wagering requirement is the amount you must stake before bonus funds (or their winnings) can be withdrawn. Under the 10x cap:
- A £20 bonus with 10x wagering means £200 of stakes before you can withdraw.
- On a slot with an RTP of around 96%, you’d expect to lose about 4% of what you stake on average – roughly £8 on £200, though actual results vary widely.
- At the £2 maximum spin for 18–24s, £200 of wagering is at least 100 spins; at £5 (25+), at least 40.

Significant terms to check
- Minimum deposit, and any excluded payment methods.
- Wagering multiple, and whether it applies to the bonus or bonus plus deposit.
- Game contributions – table and live games often count for less, or not at all.
- Maximum stake while wagering.
- Expiry of the bonus and of the wagering period.
- Maximum withdrawal from bonus winnings.
- Whether your cash or bonus balance is used first.

UK rules that shape every casino offer
- 10x wagering cap. Since 19 January 2026, a licensed operator must not apply a wagering requirement of more than 10 times to bonus funds (Gambling Commission, LCCP Social Responsibility Code 5.1.1(3a)). The Commission’s own example of the old problem: a £10 bonus at 50x meant £500 of play before you could withdraw.
- No mixed-product promotions. From the same date, a single incentive can’t combine betting, casino, bingo and lottery (SR Code 5.1.1(3b)). The Commission says “Spend £5 on casino products and get 20 spins” is compliant, but “Bet £5 and get 20 free spins” is not.
- Slot stake limits. The most you can stake per online slot game cycle is £5 if you’re 25 or over and £2 if you’re 18–24. The £5 limit started on 9 April 2025 and the £2 limit on 21 May 2025. These limits apply to online slots only, not to roulette, blackjack or other table games.
- No credit cards. Since 14 April 2020, licensed operators can’t accept credit card payments for online gambling, including through e-wallets funded by a credit card.
Staying in control
Casino games are fast and continuous. Before you claim any offer, set a deposit limit (UK-licensed casinos must give you the tools), decide how much you’re prepared to lose, and turn on reality checks.
