A sign-up offer, often marketed as a “free bet”, is the promotion a bookmaker uses to attract new customers. In the UK these offers almost always come with conditions: you open an account, deposit, place a qualifying bet with your own money, and then receive one or more free bet tokens. This page explains how to read those conditions and compare offers fairly.

How a typical sign-up offer works
While each bookmaker sets its own rules, most UK welcome offers follow a similar pattern:
- Register a new account and pass age and identity verification. UK-licensed operators must verify your age before you can deposit or gamble.
- Deposit using an eligible payment method. Some methods may be excluded from promotions.
- Place a qualifying bet of the required amount, at or above the minimum odds, within any stated time window.
- Receive free bet tokens once the qualifying bet is placed or settled, depending on the offer.
- Use the tokens before they expire, on eligible markets and at or above any minimum odds.
The key point many people miss: when a free bet wins, you normally receive the winnings without the stake. A token used at evens returns roughly the value of the token, not double it. Our guide to how free bets work covers this in detail.
The significant terms to look for
Under advertising rules in the UK, significant conditions of a promotion should be clear to you before you commit. When comparing offers, look for these:
Qualifying stake
How much of your own money you must bet to trigger the offer. Only stake what you would be comfortable losing.
Minimum odds
The qualifying bet, and often the free bets themselves, may need to be placed at or above stated odds. Bets below the minimum may not count.
Token value and structure
Is the reward one token or several smaller ones? Can tokens be split? Must they be used on specific sports?
Expiry
Free bets usually expire after a set period. If you won’t bet within that window, the offer may be worth nothing to you.
Payment method exclusions
Some offers exclude certain deposit methods. Check before depositing.
Stake returned or not
Almost always “stake not returned” for free bets. Check the wording.
Wagering requirements
Sports free bets in the UK are often free of wagering on winnings, but not always. Where wagering applies, winnings must be staked a set number of times before withdrawal. Since 19 January 2026, licensed operators may not set a wagering requirement of more than 10 times on bonus funds. (Source: Gambling Commission, LCCP SR Code 5.1.1, in force 19 January 2026.) Comparing offers fairly
A bigger headline doesn’t automatically mean a better offer. When comparing two sign-up promotions, consider:
- How much you have to stake first, compared with the token value.
- How restrictive the minimum odds are. Higher minimum odds mean a lower chance of the free bet winning.
- How long you have to use the tokens.
- How many separate conditions apply. Simpler offers are easier to understand and less likely to catch you out.
- What account tools the bookmaker provides, such as deposit limits, time-outs and reality checks.
Who sign-up offers are for
Sign-up offers are for adults aged 18 or over who live in the UK and are opening a new account with that bookmaker. They are typically limited to one per person, household, IP address or payment method. Attempting to claim more than once, or using someone else’s details, breaches the terms and can lead to the account being closed and winnings withheld.
If you have self-excluded through GamStop or directly with a bookmaker, you should not be able to open an account, and you should not attempt to. Self-exclusion is there to protect you.
Common misunderstandings
“I’ll get my stake back.” For free bet tokens, usually not. Only the winnings are paid.
“The free bet is cash.” Tokens normally can’t be withdrawn; only winnings from them can, subject to the terms.
“Any bet counts as the qualifying bet.” Not necessarily. Each-way bets, cashed-out bets, bets on certain markets or bets below the minimum odds may be excluded.
“I can use it whenever.” Tokens expire. Diary the date if you plan to use one.

Setting limits before you claim
We recommend setting a deposit limit as part of the registration process, before you deposit for any promotion. Every UK-licensed bookmaker must offer deposit limits. Decide in advance how much you are willing to spend on entertainment this month, and stick to it regardless of any offers you see.

Is there a way to win something from a bookmaker without depositing?
Free-to-play games are the main option. Sky Bet Super 6 is free to enter and pays cash prizes for predicting football scores. You need an account and must be 18 or over.
Do I need to deposit to get a free bet?
For most sign-up offers, yes. Offers without a deposit requirement are uncommon; our no deposit free bets guide explains what really exists.
Can I withdraw a free bet?
Generally not. You can usually withdraw winnings from it, subject to the terms and the bookmaker’s verification checks.
What happens if my qualifying bet loses?
For many offers, the free bets are still credited once the qualifying bet settles, win or lose. Some offers differ, so read the terms.
Can existing customers get free bets?
Some bookmakers run promotions for existing customers. These have their own terms and should be read just as carefully.
