Last checked 23 October 2026 by Tom Perkins (Sky Bet’s tennis rules read on its help centre that day). Each bookmaker’s rules were checked against its own published rules page where we could access it; unverified operators are marked.

There’s no single rule: it depends on the bookmaker. Some void match bets when a player retires. Others let bets stand once a set (or another minimum) is completed and settle on the player who advances. Markets whose outcome was already decided before the retirement are usually settled either way. Check the tennis rules of the bookmaker you used.

What counts as a retirement, walkover or disqualification?

  • Retirement: a player stops after the match has started, usually through injury or illness.
  • Walkover: a player withdraws before a ball is struck.
  • Disqualification (default): the umpire or referee ends the match against a player.

Bookmakers may treat these differently, so look for each word in the rules.

What do bookmakers’ own rules say about a retirement?

Bookmaker What its own rules page says Status
Sky Bet Retirement or disqualification before the end of the first set: match bets void, other markets void if undetermined. After the first set: match bets settled “Win/Void” at ATP, WTA, Grand Slam, Challenger, Davis Cup and Fed Cup events (the player who goes through is the winner, bets on the retiring player are void), but void at ITF, UTR and exhibition events. Other markets void if undetermined. Its “Rules That Play Fair” page adds: “If your player throws in the towel and retires, we’ll refund your bet.” Verified on Sky Bet tennis rules, 23 October 2026
BetMGM UK BetMGM UK’s Sports FAQs say that in case of disqualification, withdrawal or walkover, bets where the result has not been determined are voided. We could not access the full UK tennis rules to confirm how a retirement is handled after a set. Partly verified; BetMGM UK Sports FAQs
Betfred, BoyleSports, Unibet, Midnite, Betway Not verified. Their rules pages were not accessible from our checking location on 21 Oct 2026. Check the bookmaker’s tennis rules

How are “already decided” markets settled after a retirement?

Most rules, including Sky Bet’s “void (if undetermined)”, settle a market that was already decided before the retirement and void the rest. In practice (our own illustration, not a quote from any bookmaker’s rules): if a set is abandoned at 4-4, Over 9.5 games in that set has already won and Under 9.5 has lost, because any finish needs at least 10 games, while Over/Under 10.5 could still have gone either way, so it’s void. Likewise, if a best-of-three match stops at 6-4 2-6, a match bet on Over 23.5 games has won, because a deciding set adds at least six more games.

Example: how a retirement after the first set is settled under Sky Bet’s rules

Player A leads Player B 6-4 2-1 at an ATP event when B retires.

Bet Result under Sky Bet’s rules
Player A to win the match Wins (A goes through)
Player B to win the match Void, stake refunded
Set betting: B to win 2-0 Loses, because it was already impossible when B retired
Set betting: A 2-0, A 2-1 or B 2-1 Void, because each could still have happened
Same score at an ITF or UTR event Match bets void

Tennis bets in accas

If a tennis leg is voided, it is normally removed and your acca runs on the remaining legs. If the bookmaker settles it on the player who advanced, it counts as a winner or loser. Either way, the result follows the rules of the bookmaker you bet with.

Racing has its own settlement rules for non-runners and ties: see how Rule 4 deductions work and dead heat rules, or browse all our betting guides.

Other tennis rules worth knowing

  • Change of surface or venue: rules differ. Sky Bet says bets stand if the surface, venue or indoor/outdoor setting changes, before or during a match.
  • Postponed or suspended matches: rules on how long a match can be delayed before bets are void differ by bookmaker.
  • Tie-break formats: check how a match tie-break counts in “total games” or “set betting” markets.

Tennis offers

If a bookmaker runs a tennis promotion, its own terms decide how a retirement is treated; see free bets and our UK betting sites reviews.

Frequently asked questions

Do I get my money back if a tennis player retires? At some bookmakers yes, with match bets voided; at others the bet stands once a minimum has been played. Check the bookmaker’s tennis rules.

What happens to set betting if a player retires? Markets not yet determined are usually void; markets already decided are settled.

Is a walkover treated like a retirement? Not always. A walkover happens before play starts and is commonly void. Check the rules.

Does Sky Bet refund my bet if my tennis player retires? Yes for match bets on the player who retires: Sky Bet voids them, and its Rules That Play Fair page says it will refund your bet. If the retirement comes after the first set at an ATP, WTA, Grand Slam, Challenger, Davis Cup or Fed Cup event, bets on the opponent are settled as winners (checked 23 October 2026).

Where do I find the rules? Usually in a “Sports rules” or “Betting rules” section of the bookmaker’s help centre, under Tennis.

What happens to my tennis bet if a player is disqualified? At Sky Bet, a disqualification follows the same timing rules as a retirement. Its match betting rules add that bets on the player who wins under tournament rules stand, and bets on the disqualified player are void. Other bookmakers can differ, so check their tennis rules.
