Sunderland v Leeds kicks off at 4.30pm (GMT) on Sunday 25 October 2026 at the Stadium of Light and is live on Sky Sports. Our lean is Leeds not to lose: Sunderland are bottom after four league defeats in a row and have scored once in three home games, while Leeds have lost only once and conceded six league goals, the third-fewest in the division. Sunderland drew 1-1 at Lech Poznań in the Europa League on Thursday evening, so they have three days to recover. Leeds last played on Sunday 18 October. These are our opinions, not certainties, and we don’t quote odds because prices move.

Neither manager’s final pre-match news conference had been reported when we checked at 08:20 BST on Friday 23 October, so team news can still change. Line-ups are usually confirmed about an hour before kick-off.

What is the Sunderland team news?

Sunderland will be without Kevin Danso, who serves a one-match league ban after his red card in the 2-0 defeat at Bournemouth last Sunday. Sunderland played most of that game with ten men. The ban doesn’t cover Europe, so he started in Poznań. Brian Brobbey, who has three of Sunderland’s six league goals, wasn’t risked on Thursday because of a hamstring injury, but Le Bris said: “He won’t play tomorrow, that’s obvious but he should be ready for Leeds.” Wilson Isidor and Thomas Meunier remain major doubts. Both were doing individual work rather than full training on Wednesday, according to the Sunderland Echo. Dan Ballard and Romaine Mundle are out injured. Omar Alderete is available after missing Wednesday’s open training session.

Le Bris made six changes for Poznań. Habib Diarra made his first start of the season, Granit Xhaka started in midfield and Noah Sadiki was rested on the bench. 21-year-old Timur Tutierov led the line and scored after two minutes, his first goal for the club. Sunderland had 25 shots, 11 of them on target, but conceded a 70th-minute equaliser from a corner (Sky Sports).

What is the Leeds team news?

Leeds have named an unchanged starting XI for five league games in a row, the Yorkshire Evening Post reports, most recently in the 1-1 draw with Manchester United. Joe Rodon is still out. Farke reported progress last week but said he hadn’t returned to team training, and Leeds United News, citing Premier Injuries, suggests the trip to Bournemouth on 31 October as a more realistic return. Dan James has missed the last two games with a back problem but is back in training and could be involved. Mateo Joseph is out long term with an anterior cruciate ligament injury he suffered on loan at Mallorca.

What form are Sunderland and Leeds in?

Sunderland (all seven league games, most recent last): L 1-2 at Ipswich, W 1-0 v Fulham, D 1-1 at Brentford, L 0-2 v Arsenal, L 3-5 at Man City, L 0-2 v Brighton, L 0-2 at Bournemouth. Europe has gone much better. They beat AZ Alkmaar and Torreense and drew in Poznań, so they have 7 points from three Europa League games.

Leeds (all seven league games): W 1-0 at Nottingham Forest, D 1-1 v Brentford, D 1-1 at Brighton, W 4-1 v Newcastle, D 0-0 v Crystal Palace, L 1-2 at Arsenal, D 1-1 v Man Utd. Their only defeat was at Arsenal, but they have won just once since the opening day.

What happened when Sunderland played Leeds last season?

Sunderland were unbeaten against Leeds in 2025/26. The game at the Stadium of Light on 28 December 2025 finished 1-1: Simon Adingra scored for Sunderland and Dominic Calvert-Lewin equalised just after half-time. Sunderland then won 1-0 at Elland Road on 3 March 2026 with a 70th-minute Habib Diarra penalty, given after a VAR review for handball by Ethan Ampadu. Stuart Attwell, who referees on Sunday, was also the referee that night.

What are the key stats for Sunderland v Leeds?

  • Sunderland have lost four league games in a row and failed to score in their last two at home (0-2 against Arsenal and against Brighton).
  • None of Sunderland’s three home league games has had both teams scoring or more than two goals.
  • Leeds have conceded six league goals. Only Arsenal and Brighton (five each) have let in fewer.
  • Leeds have drawn four of their seven league games, the joint-most in the division with Brentford, Everton and Man Utd (BBC table).
  • Sunderland’s expected goals (1.6 per game) are well above their actual goals (0.9 per game), per StatsNext, which suggests their finishing has been poor rather than their chance creation.
  • Attwell has shown 28 yellow cards and 2 red cards in five games this season (all competitions), per Leeds United.

What is our Sunderland v Leeds prediction?

These are our opinions on how the match might go, not certainties. Football is unpredictable, and any bet can lose. Only stake what you can afford to lose.

Leeds not to lose: this is our main lean. Leeds’ defence has been the most reliable part of their season, and Sunderland have scored once in three home league games. Sunderland are also coming off a Thursday night in Poland and are without Danso at the back. A double chance bet (Leeds or the draw) covers the draw, which matters for a side that has drawn four of seven.

Result: we lean Leeds, but not strongly. Sunderland won at Elland Road last season, their Europa League form shows the squad is better than 20th place, and their expected goals say they have been unlucky in front of goal. If Brobbey starts, Sunderland have a much sharper edge.

Goals: under 2.5 goals fits both teams’ records: no Sunderland home game has had more than two goals, and only two Leeds games have. Treat that with caution, though. Sunderland have conceded two goals a game overall, and Leeds scored four against Newcastle.

Score guess: Sunderland 0-1 Leeds, the same score we have gone for in Super 6 this weekend.

Player markets: wait for confirmed line-ups. Brobbey’s fitness, whether Isidor is involved and who replaces Danso are all still open.
