How we write these tips
These are our reads on each game, based on the table, recent form and the fixture schedule. They aren’t logged selections and we don’t quote odds here because prices move. Check the current price with the bookmaker before you bet. Any tip we formally publish with odds goes into our tips results log, wins and losses alike. No tip is certain and every bet can lose.
Ipswich v Nottingham Forest (Friday, 20:00)
Ipswich have had a feast-or-famine start: three wins, four defeats and no draws, with 11 goals scored and 15 conceded. Forest are 19th, have lost their last three and have scored only five league goals all season. Forest’s problem is at the other end of the pitch, so Ipswich at home are the more likely side to score first.
Our lean: Ipswich not to lose. Forest have five league goals in seven games and have lost three in a row.
Coventry v Fulham (Saturday, 15:00)
A meeting of 17th and 18th, separated by a point. Coventry have lost five of seven but won two in a row before Monday’s defeat at Tottenham. Fulham have one league win, their most recent game. Both sides have scored seven or fewer, so this has the look of a tight, nervy game.
Our lean: under 2.5 goals. Neither attack has given much reason to expect a high-scoring afternoon.
Crystal Palace v Newcastle (Sunday, 14:00)
Palace play Beşiktaş in Istanbul on Thursday night and have three days to recover. They’ve conceded 17 league goals, the most in the division, and lost their last league game. Newcastle have lost three of their last four league games and conceded 14. Both defences have been leaky.
Our lean: both teams to score. It’s hard to make a case for either defence keeping a clean sheet.
Update, 22 October: Palace have Ben Chilwell back, but Takehiro Tomiyasu is out until the next international break. Axel Disasi has served his three-match ban, and Dean Henderson is back in training. Newcastle are still without Anthony Elanga, Jacob Ramsey and Tino Livramento. Team news, form and stats are in our full Crystal Palace v Newcastle prediction.
Hull City v Brentford (Sunday, 14:00)
Brentford have drawn four of seven and lost just once, though that defeat was their most recent game. Hull, back in the top flight, are ninth after a bright start but haven’t won in five league games (D3 L2). Brentford have the stronger goal difference (+5 to +1).
Our lean: Brentford or the draw. The draw is a live result for a side with four already this season.
Sunderland v Leeds (Sunday, 16:30)
Sunderland are bottom, have lost four league games in a row, and played Lech Poznań on Thursday. Their Europa League form (two wins from two) is very different from their league form. Leeds are seventh, have lost only once and have conceded six, the third-fewest in the league behind Arsenal and Brighton (five each).
Our lean: Leeds not to lose. Leeds’ defence is the best part of their game and Sunderland have scored only six times in the league.
