The UK wagering cap means that, since 19 January 2026, a Gambling Commission-licensed operator must not apply a wagering requirement of more than 10 times to bonus funds. It’s in Social Responsibility Code 5.1.1 of the Licence Conditions and Codes of Practice (LCCP). This page sets out exactly what the rule says, what it doesn’t cover, and how to check an offer against it. For the general maths of wagering, see wagering requirements explained; for offer types, see casino bonuses.

What the rule says

LCCP SR Code 5.1.1 (Rewards and bonuses) applies to all licences except gaming machine technical and gambling software licences. It says licensees must not:

“Apply wagering requirements, which requires a customer to play through bonus funds, over a maximum of 10 times. A wagering requirement is where a customer is required to make wagers totalling a particular value for funds to become withdrawable.”

Because it’s a social responsibility code, compliance is a licence condition. The Commission says a breach can lead to a licence review, suspension, revocation or a financial penalty.

Key dates

  • 26 March 2025: the Commission announced the cap and the mixed-product ban after consultation.
  • 19 January 2026: the rules came into force. The Commission originally set 19 December 2025, then moved it to 19 January 2026.

Why the Commission brought it in

The Commission’s own example: “a £10 bonus with a 50 times wagering requirement requires the consumer to play through £500 before the winnings can be withdrawn.” It said such high requirements “could confuse consumers and lead them to gamble for longer, and faster, than they are used to”, and that capping at ten “decreases the likelihood of harm, reduces complexity, and improves transparency”.

The other rules introduced at the same time

  • No mixed-product incentives: an incentive can’t include more than one type of gambling product (betting, casino, bingo and lottery). The Commission’s guidance says “Spend £5 on casino products and get 20 free spins” is compliant, but “Bet £5 to get 20 free spins” is not. A bonus the customer can spend on any product of their choice, without restriction, is allowed.
  • No “faster is bigger” offers: operators must not increase an incentive’s value because the qualifying spend is reached in a shorter time than the whole offer period.
  • Clear, fair terms: terms must be “clear, transparent, and fair and readily accessible”.

What the cap doesn’t cover

The Code caps the wagering multiple. It doesn’t set rules on these, so they still vary by offer:

  • What the multiple applies to: the bonus only, spin winnings, or (where an operator words it so) other amounts. Read the wording.
  • Game contribution: the Code doesn’t mention weighting. If table games count 10%, each £1 staked on them counts as 10p towards the requirement.
  • Time limits, maximum stakes and win caps while a bonus is active.
  • Minimum deposit and qualifying stake to unlock an offer.

Checking live offers against the cap

Here’s how our verified casino offers describe wagering (from operators’ pages, last checked 21 October 2026):

Offer Wagering as stated Other terms that matter
Unibet: 300 x 10p spins on Big Bass Splash Winnings wagered 10x on slots within 30 days Slots 100%, table games 10%; some games blocked; withdrawing cash before completing wagering cancels bonus funds
10bet: 100% up to £25 Bonus wagered 10x on slots within 3 days Max bonus winnings £1,000; some games excluded; Skrill and Neteller deposits excluded
Midnite: 100 x 10p spins on Big Bass Splash Not stated on the offer page Spins expire 7 days after crediting; free stake not returned

Worked example: 10bet’s maximum £25 bonus at 10x means £250 of slot stakes within 3 days. At the £2 maximum spin for 18–24s that’s at least 125 spins; at £5 (25+), at least 50. With 25p spins it’s 1,000 spins. Short deadlines can push you to play faster than you’d like, so it’s fine to skip a bonus.

If an offer seems to break the cap

  1. Check the full terms; the requirement may apply to something other than bonus funds.
  2. Raise it with the operator’s customer service and, if unresolved, its formal complaints process.
  3. If that doesn’t settle it, licensed operators must offer an independent alternative dispute resolution (ADR) provider, named in their terms.
  4. You can also report concerns to the Gambling Commission, though it doesn’t resolve individual disputes.

Related: no wagering bonuses, free spins offers and slot guides.

Other UK rules worth knowing

  • Slot stake limits: £5 per spin for 25+ and £2 for 18–24-year-olds.
  • No credit cards: banned for gambling since 14 April 2020.

Staying in control

A wagering requirement can make it feel like you have to keep playing to “finish” a bonus. You don’t; forfeiting a bonus is better than spending more than you planned. Set a deposit limit before you play, decide in advance what you can afford to lose, and use reality checks and time-outs. Never chase losses. If you want a break from all UK-licensed gambling sites at once, GamStop is free and lets you self-exclude for 6 months, 1 year or 5 years. The National Gambling Helpline (0808 8020 133) is free, confidential and open 24 hours. More help: responsible gambling.

Frequently asked questions

What is the maximum wagering requirement in the UK? 10 times, for bonus funds, under LCCP SR Code 5.1.1 since 19 January 2026.

When did the 10x wagering cap start? 19 January 2026. It was announced on 26 March 2025.

Does the cap apply to game contribution? The Code doesn’t mention weighting, so lower contributions for table games can still apply.

Can casinos combine casino and sports bonuses? No. Since 19 January 2026, one incentive can’t include more than one product type.

What if an offer has more than 10x wagering? Check the wording, complain to the operator, then use its ADR provider if needed.
